Blame It On Mercury

There is a very wonderful book still in print (I think) called Saturn, A New Look At An Old Devil that talks a good bit about the influence of Saturn on our daily life as it trudges around its path, touching on our challenges and lighting up the little pinball bumpers that are going to give us the lessons The Universe feels we need.  This book is especially helpful in dealing with the real bugger of our 2 Saturn return times.

If Saturn is “An Old Devil,” then Mercury is definitely “That Little Shit.”

Mercury, of course, governs Gemini and Virgo (that’s me) and is all about communications, connections, things that travel through the air (like sound and radio waves and techy stuff like that).  A few times a year, from our little earthly perspective, Mercury appears to go backward through the signs on its rapid course around the Sun.  Of course, it’s not really going backwards.  It’s because it’s going so much faster than the Earth is going and some weird overlapping causes the “retrograde” appearance.  The actual time of retrograde lasts only around 3 1/2 weeks, but things do not really even out again until Mercury returns to the place where it was when it started going backwards, which takes a total of about 6 weeks or so from the time it first went retrograde.

Being a Virgo and ruled by Mercury, I can usual feel the change in energy when it has been going backwards for a few days.  I intentionally do not track the retrogrades because I don’t want the power of suggestion to start jacking everything up.  Lord knows the retrograde energy does enough of that already.

Somewhere before 8-10 days in, I’ll start looking around and seeing all kinds of things getting screwed up, wonder if we’re in retrograde, look it up and voila.  It’s rarely wrong.

Mercury Retrograde causes schedules to get all messed up, millions of miscommunications to occur, you drop things more often, computers go very bad much more frequently, things are misplaced and overall, it’s just a time to lay low and lick your wounds and not venture out unless you absolutely have to.  If you do have to engage the world, try not to sign any contracts or depend on anyone to do anything important because it’s very possibly going to go into the pooper.

The theme for Mercury Retrograde is to be ready to “re.”  Re-schedule, re-negotiate, re-explain, re-write, re-create and so on.

It’s not the worst thing you’ll ever experience, but it definitely pays to know why things get sequentially screwy now and then.

This time, Mercury went retrograde on September 24th while in Libra.  Since Libra represents balance and intellect, you can bet that everyone brain is mush and everything feels particularly out of whack.  This would also cause emotions to run high and be quite volatile since those Libras are always walking the balance between half crazy and sane all the time, so send them backasswards and they just fall apart, which is going to spill out onto all of us when the backwards happens in their sign.  Mercury goes direct again on October 15th and gets back to where it was originally on when?  Guess when?  October 31st.

It’s going to be a rollicking harvest, baybees!!
